The queens of pop made headlines 20 years ago when they kissed in the VMAs while performing Madonna’s song Hollywood with Christina Aguilera on stage, wowing audiences around the world.

Britney opened the show by singing Madonna’s Like a Virgin, emerging from a wedding cake dressed as a bride, just as Madonna did at her 1984 VMA performance.

Shortly after that, Christina joined Britney onstage for the song before Madonna appeared and released her single Hollywood. During the performance, Madonna leaned in and kissed Britney.

In 2018, Christina, who was onstage for the kiss, recalled feeling left out of the moment, saying her kiss with Madonna moments later was not shown.

Christina went on to explain that the fabricated drama was a “low blow” since Britney and Justin were no longer an item.

Andy later clarified: “I don’t think people fully realize that she [Madonna] kissed with you two that day.

She confirmed the sentiment, recalling, “Yeah, because I definitely saw the paper the next day and was like, ‘Oh, well, I guess I kind of stayed out of it.'”
