Earlier this week, Jennie said the deaths of Shannen and her co-star Luke Perry in 2019 at the age of 52 made her “really anxious” about the topic of mortality

“Especially with Luke passing and now Shannen,” Garth told Tori Spelling on their 90210MG podcast on Monday, July 22.

“I just feel like, I don’t know, any of us could go at any moment. That kind of feeling… yeah, that’s scary.”

Jennie played Kelly Taylor on the popular television series in 292 episodes from 1990 to 2000.

“Nobody will ever really understand it unless they were there at the time and went through the experience with us,” Garth said.

“It’s hard to believe that other people understand that connection.”

Garth said that despite Doherty’s documented health issues, she was still very surprised to hear of her death. She knew how resilient she was.

“It’s crazy that we could be shocked, knowing that she was sick and how hard she fought, but it still felt shocking,” Garth said, adding that she “never thought she would… [Doherty] would succumb to cancer.’

Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. The cancer went into remission, but returned in 2017 at stage four. Last year, the cancer spread to her brain.

Garth shared a loving tribute to Doherty the day after her death, sharing two throwback photos of the two.

“I am still processing my immense grief over the loss of my longtime friend Shannen, the woman I have often described as one of the strongest people I have ever known. Our connection was real and honest,” her caption began.

“We were pitted against each other so often, but none of it reflected the truth of our real relationship, which was based on mutual respect and admiration. She was courageous, passionate, determined, and very loving and generous.

“I will miss her and will always hold her in my heart and memories. My heart breaks for her family and Bowie and all the people who loved her,” she wrote.

Jennie also shared a lighthearted story about Shannen in the podcast.

I remembered something like that [were] time after we stopped filming [90210] and I had just gotten divorced – I think – and she had a special interest [in] whoever I was dating. She wanted to meet them, she wanted to screen them actually, I think.’

This would be during the period after Garth and his first husband Dave Abrams divorced in 1996.

“We went out to dinner with two of my ‘boyfriends’ during that strange time and I can still remember her looking at them all from across the table, appraising them,” Garth recalls.

“And then I was like, ‘What do you think?’ And then she told me,” she said.
