She took a break from the uproar surrounding the behavior of Spain’s FA president Luis Rubiales, who has been provisionally suspended by FIFA after the World Cup final.
A total of 81 players signed a joint statement from FUTPRO, the Spanish players’ union, refusing to play for the national team until Rubiales is dropped. Hermoso says she is “vulnerable and the victim of an impulsive, sexist, place act without any consent on my part.”
The Spanish Football Federation has issued an extraordinary threat of legal action as they accused Hermoso of ‘lies’ and tried to explain how the consensual kiss came about.
All eleven of manager Jorge Vilda’s World Cup-winning staff have resigned in the wake of the scandal and his own unpopularity with the players, with Vilda seen as a stooge for Rubiales.
A large number of figures from women’s and men’s football have expressed their distaste for Rubiales. Spanish star Alexis Putellas wrote: “This is unacceptable. It is over. With your partner @jennihermoso’, as David de Gea, Iker Casillas and many more have brought in the beleaguered Spanish FA chief.
In solidarity with his female counterparts, Spanish striker Borja Iglesias has refused to play for the national team until Rubiales leaves.
