‘That’s empty. Then we left,” she said.

“Oh, was it sad?” Kotb asked.

“It was sad, but we would have taken that picture too,” Bush Hager explained. “Now we’ve moved (and taken pictures) with the kids several times with the empty apartment and the kids in it.”

“There’s something about the first (home),” she added, saying it was the place where they brought home two of their three children.

Bush Hager lived with her husband in Baltimore, Maryland after they tied the knot in 2008. A few years later, they moved to New York City to be closer to her twin sister, Barbara Bush.

The couple welcomed Mila in 2013 and Poppy in 2015. Their daughters are now ten and eight, and they also have a son, Hal, who turned four earlier this month.

Both their beach house and former apartment were decorated by Dallas-based interior designer Traci White, Bush Hager’s college roommate at the University of Texas.

Bush Hager talked about her beloved beach house on the North Shore in an interview Porch in 2019, with images of the property.

She said they rented in the area for about five or six summers and fell in love with the cottage during an open day.

“There was something that reminded me of Texas, of being outside. Even so close to the city, it had a remoteness about it,” she told the magazine.

In designing the home’s interior, Bush Hager took old pieces from both her and her husband’s families and reupholstered them, including a 20th-century couch from her side and a pair of wing railings from the Hagers.

“Jenna and her mom (former First Lady Laura Bush) like to look at pieces individually, to find beauty in what’s there,” White told Veranda. “It’s never about ‘new, new, new’.”

The article was published about three years before the Hagers moved to Connecticut, but she seemed to hint that they would one day leave New York City.

In the interview, Bush Hager spoke about her love of the outdoors and how she envisioned her three children having their own backyard where they could run around barefoot.

“There’s something wonderful about being out there watching the rain with your friends and kids,” she said. “You’re outside and you’re barefoot. That’s how Henry and I grew up, and that’s what we want for our children.’
