Tennis legend Jelena Dokic suffers eye injury after gravel hit her in the face while trackside at the Grand Prix

Tennis champion Jelena Dokic suffered an eye injury while watching the Grand Prix track after gravel was swept up by Fernando Alonso’s car.

Dokic was in the Mercedes-AMG Lounge watching Formula 1 practice at Melbourne’s Albert Park on Friday when Alonso took a wide corner and went off the track.

Some of the gravel and debris kicked up by his car landed straight in the tennis legend’s right eye, forcing her to require help from paramedics working at the event.

“When you go to the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix weekend and a car goes off the track right in front of you, literally, and all the rock debris flies right into your eye,” Dokic wrote on Instagram.

‘Fernando Alonso went off the track and the rubble you see flying off the rear wheels hit my right eye.

‘I had to be treated for it, but everything went well. Just a bloodshot and scratched eye. I will survive.’

Dokic shared a video of herself getting her eye flushed out with drops while laughing about her makeup possibly being ruined.

‘I’m completely fine. Ready to watch some more F1,” she continued.

“Oh, and I can confirm that the makeup somehow stayed on and didn’t come off. Astonishing.’

Fernando Alonso made a wide turn, kicking up gravel and debris as he went off track

It comes after Daniel Ricciardo was eliminated from the first Grand Prix qualifying session for the first time in history after exceeding track limits.

The Aussie had delivered what looked like a final lap to progress to Q2, before the stewards canceled that time as they felt Ricciardo had exceeded the track limits at Turn 5.

The deleted lap time would have put Ricciardo in the top 10, which would have been enough to advance to Q2.

Dokic said she was ‘all good’ after scratching her eye on Friday and looking forward to more F1
