As Ava fights to save her career and Deborah tries to reinvigorate hers, the older comedian hires the younger man to work for her.

The two women have a combative and initially reluctant professional relationship, but as their mutual respect gradually grows, a relationship forms between them.

By the end of the second season, Ava has helped Deborah develop a comedy special that turns out to be a huge career triumph.

Trying to be magnanimous, Deborah later fires Ava so that the attractive young writer can pursue her own career instead of being consumed by Deborah’s.

It’s raining rave reviews for the second season, with Variety rhapsodizing that ‘he doesn’t miss a beat’, the Washington Post gushing: ‘He’s firing on all cylinders’ and vanity fair saying that it aims ‘higher and deeper’ than the first season.
