JavaScript is no longer the favorite programming language for developers

A new report has revealed that JavaScript is no longer the best when it comes to the world’s most popular programming languages.

CircleCIs Software Delivery Status Report 2022 (opens in new tab) found that TypeScript has now overtaken JavaScript to the number one position, knocking over one of the biggest names in the industry.

The company says the change likely has to do with its developer-friendly features, such as allowing for smaller bugs to be caught locally and more frequent code capture compared to JavaScript.

Top programming languages

From 2019 to 2021, only Python remained consistent in popularity according to the report, which ranks the language in fourth place. Other top ten languages are HTML, Java and PHP.

Further down the list, HashiCorp (HCL) has entered the top ten, finishing in a respectable ninth place, leaving both HTML and Swift one and two places behind, respectively.

“Elite software delivery teams use developer-friendly tools and practices that enable them to automate, scale, and successfully embrace change when needed,” noted CircleCI VP of Platform Michael Stahnke.

“High performers are drawn to tools that drive collaboration, repeatability and productivity.”

The analysis also delved into other areas of programmers’ workflow, uncovering four key benchmarks that define some of the most successful engineering teams. They include an average workflow duration of five to ten minutes, recovery of failed runs fixed or restored within an hour, a success rate of at least 90% for the standard branch of their application, and regular implementation according to business requirements, at least once a day.
