Goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen had to endure a serious blunder on Saturday during the game between NEC and Heerenveen.

After the visitors took the lead, NEC hit back with goals from Magnus Mattsson and Landry Dimata before Kees van Wonderen’s side equalized through Sydney van Hooijdonk.

As the game entered the closing stages, substitute Antoine Colassin grabbed a high pass and reached the goal.

The 22-year-old struck first, but his shot lacked any real power and appeared innocently headed towards the goalkeeper’s near post.

However, Cillessen appeared to misjudge where the ball was going and made no attempt to stop it as it bounced into the net to put the visitors ahead.

The Netherlands international seemed to assume a shot went wide before it hit his near post

A frustrated Cillessen headbutted the goalpost and was later comforted by his teammates as Colassin drove off in celebration.

Heerenveen managed to secure the three points and the video of Cillessen’s mistake later started to gain popularity on social media.

The 34-year-old returned to his boyhood club at the start of the current season, having spent six years in La Liga with Barcelona and Valencia.

Cillessen was also Louis van Gaal’s No. 1 in the 2014 World Cup, with then-Ajax star replacing Tim Krul in a penalty shootout against Costa Rica, which the Orange won.

Despite Van Gaal returning as Netherlands coach ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, Cillessen was not selected for the side that would reach the last eight, with the former Manchester United boss preferring the inexperienced trio of Andries Noppert Remko Pasveer and Justin. Bijlow.

However, Cillessen has returned to the national team under Ronald Koeman, playing 90 minutes in EURO 2024 qualifiers against France and Gibraltar.
