England are ready to draw a line under the names of Jason Roy and Matt Parkinson when they on Friday name their squad for the Twenty20 World Cup.

Roy, one of the most significant figures in the transformation of England’s white-ball cricket, will be dropped, as reported in Thursday’s Sportsmail, after a desperate run of form. It will be a long way back, at 33, for the Surrey opener.

Also expected to miss out is Lancashire’s Parkinson, with England finally deciding his leg-spin is just not quick or good enough for the highest level.

Hampshire all-rounder Liam Dawson is likely to be the back up spinner to Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid for a tournament that begins in October.

Dawid Malan is expected to step up to Roy’s place as opener in the T20 side alongside captain Jos Buttler when he has recovered from injury and there should also be batting places in the 15-man squad for Phil Salt and Surrey’s uncapped Will Jacks.

England will also name a 19-man party for the seven-match T20 series against Pakistan that precedes the World Cup later this month and new names expected to get their chance include Kent batter Jordan Cox and Middlesex seamer Tom Helm.

Moeen Ali is set to captain England’s matches during Jos Buttler’s recovery from a calf injury

Moeen is set to captain the side in the early matches in Pakistan while Buttler recovers from a calf injury.

There will be no place for the ostracised Alex Hales, finally consigning him for good to a franchise future at 33 with England still reluctant to go back to him after the breakdown in trust following his failed test for recreational drugs ahead of the 2019 World Cup.

Possible England World Cup squad

Jos Buttler (captain), Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Phil Salt, Will Jacks, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Liam Dawson, Chris Jordan, Reece Topley, Richard Gleeson.

Reserves: Sam Curran, Tom Helm and Harry Brook.

England likely to take all 18 to Pakistan along with Jordan Cox.
