Jason Momoa lands surprise new role in DC Universe after playing Aquaman
Jason Momoa is officially switching gears within the DC Universe after eight years of playing fan favorite Aquaman.
The 45-year-old actor went to work on Monday Instagram to reveal that he has turned the page on playing a superhero and is doing his best as the villain Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow.
In 2023, fans speculated that the Hawaiian star could play the role. Momoa said at the time that he had not been contacted to play Lobo, but happily accepted an invitation to audition.
‘Lobo was always my favorite. What if they call me and ask me to play it? It’s a hell yeah,” he said Fandango at the time. “But I didn’t receive that call. So I don’t want to spread fake news.’
Now, in a full-circle moment, he reshared the same quote from 2023, simply writing the caption, “They called.”
He will appear opposite Milly Alcock, who stars in the lead role. Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026.

Superman director and DC CEO James Gunn took to the comments section to congratulate the 6-foot-2 actor on his return to the DC franchise: “Welcome, my friend.”
Lobo – Spanish for ‘Wolf’ – first appeared in the comic Omega Men #3 in June 1983. The character was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen.
According to a fan description, Lobo is “an intergalactic bounty hunter, the last Czarnian. Known for his colorful speech and quick recovery, he has been more of a nuisance than a threat.”
Monday’s announcement marks a major shift for Momoa, who previously headlined the DC Aquaman films.
The Aquaman franchise is believed to be over with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023. And Momoa seemingly confirms that the future of further films in the beloved franchise ‘doesn’t look good’.
‘I love this character and [I would want to] been playing it for a long time,” he told ET in December 2023.
While he would be open to continuing to play the water superhero, he says, “Right now I’m thinking, ‘It doesn’t look so good.’
And the actor also teased that he was interested in continuing to star in the DCU, but in different roles.

The highly anticipated films will provide a detailed look at the world of the popular video game.
