Jasmine Hartin just gave £1,792 to the family of the Belize police chief she shot dead

Socialite Jasmine Hartin has given just £1,792 to the family of a Belizean police chief she shot dead – and now they are demanding she pay ‘genuine damages’.

But Hartin, 33, is fighting to get her passport back so she can flee the Central American country and see her six-year-old twins for the first time in a year.

Last night, her spokeswoman suggested that Hartin, who shares twins with Tory grandee Lord Ashcroft’s son Andrew, was a conspiracy victim and was demanding “justice for Jasmine.”

The widow and six children of her victim, Superintendent Henry Jemmott, 42, urged her to cough up more – and were deeply concerned about her leaving Belize.

Leslie Mendez, attorney for Supt Jemmott’s widow Romit Wilson, 39, said: ‘Jasmine continues to present herself as a victim in this case where six children lost their father, a woman lost her partner of 13 years and sisters lost their brother.

Her actions have left wounds that take decades to heal. Being held accountable is not an injustice or the result of corruption.

It may have surprised her to learn that Belize is a real place with real laws, courts, and lawyers — not just her fantasy getaway.

“There are real people here with lives, stories, and people they love.”

Canadian Hartin’s passport was confiscated in 2021 after she shot Supt Jemmott in the head with his pistol while they were drinking on a moonlit pier in the city of San Pedro. She later claimed he showed her how to use it.

On Wednesday she was ordered to perform 300 hours of community service and pay a £30,000 fine for Supt Jemmott’s negligent manslaughter – but none of that money will go to his next of kin.

In an effort to avoid jail time, Hartin claimed she voluntarily paid compensation to Supt Jemmott’s family.

However, the family said the payments, totaling £1,792, had only been made in exchange for Ms Wilson holding off civil proceedings against her until the criminal proceedings ended.

Ms. Mendez said, “This was a temporary arrangement. Jasmine has repeatedly misrepresented these payments and breached confidentiality. The family’s civil claim remains. Jasmine has admitted no liability there. We intend to pursue genuine redress.

“We are concerned about her leaving the country, but we will push and do everything we can to get justice for the Jemmotts.”

Hartin spent most of Thursday pleading unsuccessfully for Belize Supreme Court officials to return her passport.

She has not seen her twins by Mr. Ashcroft, 45, son of billionaire former Tory Vice-Chairman Lord Ashcroft, since he took full custody and moved with them to the Turks and Caicos Islands, near of the Bahamas, last June.

Her spokeswoman Louisa Chiaramonte said: ‘We are in the middle of a drama to get her passport back. They play games with her as usual, changing the rules on a whim. There could be some nefarious motives behind a long reaching arm.

“Hopefully we will travel out of the country soon. This is just the beginning of custody. Now that this is over, we’re going to let people know the real truth, to get some justice for Jasmine.”

Hartin is also charged with possession of cocaine after police reportedly found a substance in her handbag the night she was arrested. She is also accused of assaulting a staff member at Andrew Ashcroft’s Alaia vacation resort in Belize.
