Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne called his accuser a ‘young cow’ and described her as a ‘cuckoo’, police undercover wiretaps to a jury have revealed.
Mr Hayne, 35, was accompanied by his wife Amelia Bonnici as the second week of his trial at the New South Wales District Court began on Monday.
The former NSW and Parramatta fullback has denied sexually assaulting the woman at his Newcastle home on the night of the 2018 NRL grand final and has pleaded not guilty to two charges of aggravated sexual assault without consent.
According to Crown Prosecutor John Sfinas, Mr Hayne is accused of being ‘forceful’ and ‘rude’ while performing oral and digital sex on the woman without her consent, causing cuts and considerable bleeding.
Mr. Sfinas played a series of phone calls to Mr. Hayne’s phone in which he discussed the claims made against him by the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
The first court call was made by NRL Integrity Unit Chief Investigator Karyn Murphy on November 15, 2018, more than six weeks after the alleged incident.
Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne (pictured) called his accuser a ‘young cow’ and described her as a ‘cuckoo’, police undercover wiretaps before a jury revealed.
She left a message on the former Parramatta fullback’s phone saying she wanted to discuss a matter with him.
‘Hello Jarryd, Karyn Murphy from the Integrity Unit, I just want you to call me when you get this message. I just want to talk to you about something,” she said.
The jury heard that several hours later and unbeknownst to him, Mr. Hayne was caught by a police undercover operation talking to an unidentified man about the allegations made to the governing body.
“That Sheila went to the NRL,” Mr Hayne could be heard saying.
“Yeah, (journalist Danny Weidler) messaged me, (journalist Phil Rothfield) was chasing Beave (Hayne’s manager Wayne Beavis).”
The jury heard that Mr. Hayne later described the alleged victim as a “freak” and “insane”.
Two hours later, Mr Hayne received a phone call from former NSW Origin teammate Mitchell Pearce and the pair had a conversation about the allegations.
Mr Pearce asked Mr Hayne: ‘Are you under the bomb? Who is this sheila who comes out saying something about you?
“I was at Newie, I was like ‘oh I’ll show up on the way home,'” Mr Hayne replied.
‘So I did that and then fuck her it was dirty because the taxi was out front.

“I said ‘oh, well dude, I’m only going to be here for, you know, a little while.’ She just lost control. And then I saw a bit of the grand finale with her daughter.
He told Pearce that the alleged victim was sending him “nudes on Snapchat” prior to the alleged incident.
Mr Hayne said that after “goofing around” the woman started bleeding, which was “rare”.
He said the woman “freaked out” the night before and later “freaked out” and called the newspapers.
The jury played two more wiretaps, both of which stemmed from the same conversation with another anonymous man where Mr Hayne called the woman a “young cow” and an “idiot”.
“But you could tell she’s a fucking partner, just a weird partner, you know, a young cow just going on,” Mr. Hayne told the other man.
‘Like he was texting me. I think he started to like me or something. Then because I brushed against her, fucking exploding.
Hayne said she had not been texting the woman since the alleged incident.
Because I didn’t, you know what I mean, like I didn’t really talk to her face, she was dirty,” she said.
He added: ‘You know, you know, fuck, you talk to them for a while, they get attached and think about fucking. Well dude, you sent me an Instagram message, idiot. Like Snapchat and stuff.
‘And then because I’ve hit her, she’s exploded.’
Jarryd Hayne was a star player for the Parramatta Eels and Gold Coast Titans from 2006 to 2018.
Earlier in the day, a doctor who has examined thousands of sexual assault victims told the court about the ‘significant’ injuries the woman allegedly received.
Dr. Maria Nittis, an expert in examining suspected sexual assault victims, testified Monday, telling the court that the injuries were likely caused by “blunt force” penetration of the woman’s genitals.
Investigators asked the medical examiner to examine the woman, as she complained that she still had injuries despite the fact that the alleged assault had occurred more than a month earlier.
He told Sfinas that he met with the alleged victim six weeks after the alleged incident with Hayne and studied photos of her injuries that the woman took that night.
“It’s a blunt force injury that usually occurs in one of two ways, either because the skin has been stretched beyond its capacity and therefore tears, or because it has been crushed,” said Dr. nittis.
It has definitely been caused by penetration.
“It could be a finger, fingers or hand, it could be an object, it could be a penis.”
Dr. Nittis told the court that she was given a brief story by the alleged victim, who told her that Mr. Hayne was acting “like a jerk” on the night of the incident.
According to Crown Prosecutor John Sfinas, Mr Hayne (pictured) is accused of being ‘forceful’ and ‘rude’ while performing oral and digital sex on the woman without her consent, causing cuts and considerable bleeding.
Dr. Nittis told the court that the woman said there was “blood everywhere” and when she stood up, her vagina “hurt like hell.”
The doctor said the woman clarified that her inner labia felt swollen and “like there’s a big lump there.”
The woman had told the doctor that urinating hurt after the alleged assault and that her vagina itched “like crazy.”
The doctor explained that the woman suffered two lacerations, one smaller and another that he explained was of “unusual size.”
He also noticed a ‘purple bruise’ on the woman’s inner lips, a small bump, and an abrasion.
Dr. Nittis told the court that the lacerations were caused by the “stretching” of the tissue inside the vagina.
He said the injuries were likely caused by “violent” activity, but it was not an indicator of whether the sexual activity was consensual.

“It’s what I would call a significant injury, it’s rare to see an injury like that after a sexual assault…it would be particularly painful,” Dr. Nittis told the court.
“You can’t look at an injury and determine if there was consent…it’s an unusual injury after examining hundreds of sexual assault victims.”
At the time Dr. Nittis examined the alleged victim, he still had a raised bulge of tissue, which he described as a “tag.”
She said that in her experience of having examined ‘thousands’ of patients after an alleged sexual assault, it was not possible to look at a lesion and automatically know if consent had occurred.
Defense attorney Margaret Cunneen SC questioned whether the photos could be misleading as they were taken with an iPhone and not by a forensic professional.
‘Yes,’ replied the doctor.
Evidence from the woman’s GP read to the court earlier that day said she had a consultation with the alleged victim on October 3, 2018, just three days after the alleged assault.
The court was told that the GP examined the woman’s vagina and could see raised tissue and a “bulged area” where the injury had been.
Asked by Sfinas if he had seen that before, the GP replied: “No, I haven’t.”
She told the court that she had completed a Pap smear on the alleged victim weeks before the alleged incident and saw no problem.
The GP assessed the injuries and discussed reporting the incident to the police, but the woman said she did not want to do so.
The court was told that the woman did not want to report the matter to the police because she did not believe she “could deal with the media attention”.
But after he confessed to his sister and brother-in-law what had happened, the matter was reported to the NRL’s Integrity Unit.
The trial continues before Judge Graham Turnbull.
