Jared Leto scales the Empire State Building to announce his 2024 Thirty Seconds to Mars world tour
Jared Leto made an unprecedented ascent of the Empire State Building in an extravagant marketing move to promote his band 30 Seconds to Mars’ upcoming world tour.
The actor and singer, 51, was seen daring images shared by the iconic skyscraper climbing up the side of the building in red overalls.
The feat made Leto the first man to ever legally climb the Empire State Building, and the ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ star admitted that TODAY: ‘I have to be honest… it was a lot harder than I thought.’
He added: ‘The building is a testament to all the things that can be done in the world if we put our minds to it, which is largely the inspiration behind our most recent album, ‘It’s The End Of The World But It’s A Beautiful’ . Day’.’

Leto reportedly made the climb from floor 86 to 104, where he reached a height of about 400 meters before continuing the climb to the part of the building that lights up the skyline.
From there he climbed three levels to the ‘ice shield’ – the base of the famous antenna.
Although he has made climbs without a harness before, including in Germany in June, he made this attempt with full gear and ropes securing him to the building.
“I was more excited than nervous to tell you the truth,” he said, adding that the effort was much more difficult than he had initially hoped because of “the endurance it took.”
“(It was) the endurance it took, and it was very sharp,” Leto continued, noting that the sharp edges drew blood on his hands during the climb.
While the power-intensive climb took about 20 minutes before reaching the famous lights, Leto said he received a moving but unexpected boost during his ascent.
“I made it to the top and I just said, I saw my mother through the window on the 80th floor,” he said. “That was a nice surprise.”
After the hair-raising stunt, Leto reportedly watched the sunrise over the city.
“Ever since I was a kid, New York has been a place where you want to make your dreams come true,” he added.
“And as a young child I wanted to be an artist, and New York was the place where you became an artist. And the Empire State Building was always that symbol for me.
‘I’ve always been fascinated by the Empire State Building and I love climbing.’
Leto’s ‘Seasons’ tour will travel around the world, covering Latin America, Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand.
The tour will mark the first time in more than five years that Leto has gone on a world tour with 30 Seconds to Mars.
Starting in March 2024 in South America, the band will then head to UK and European dates throughout the spring, before a summer stint in the US.
Support acts announced so far include AFI, Poppy and KennyHoopla.

While Leto hopes his high-rise efforts will draw fans to the tour, some may note that this isn’t the first time he’s used climbing to gain some attention.
In June, the 51-year-old was spotted climbing the wall of a hotel in Germany in front of stunned onlookers.
The Academy Award winner traversed the outside of buildings in Berlin, where he was believed to be staying with his model girlfriend Thet Thinn, 27, during one of the first times they were photographed together in public.
After his daring climb of the Empire State Building, Leto was asked what he planned to climb next, and he jokingly “went to bed.”
He added that his repeated appearances on the side of buildings stem from his passion for urban climbing.
“I like climbing buildings in cities,” he said. ‘It’s really fun to do.’
