Japan airliner inferno: Flames engulf plane carrying more than 300 passengers ‘after colliding with coast guard aircraft’ at Tokyo’s Haneda airport
- BREAKING: More to come
A large plane carrying more than 300 passengers exploded at an airport near Tokyo today, just a day after a brutal magnitude 7.6 earthquake devastated vast swathes of Japan's west coast.
Shocking footage showed the Japan Airlines plane being engulfed by a raging fire as it stood on the runway of Haneda Airport in Ota City, Tokyo, with flames pouring from the passenger windows.
The plane collided with a Coast Guard plane as it drove along the runway, Japanese television reported, with the collision causing the plane to burst into flames.
One eyewitness wrote on X: 'A plane exploded in front of me…' and shared a video of the passenger plane on fire.
Fire crews were immediately deployed to the scene, with footage from Japanese broadcaster NHK showing firefighters desperately trying to extinguish the flames with multiple hoses.
