The Jan. 6 panel plans to vote Thursday to subpoena former President Donald Trump, likely its last public hearing, according to multiple reports.

The panel announced ahead of Thursday that their meeting was a “meeting” rather than a “hearing,” meaning they “could potentially hold a committee vote on further investigative actions based on that evidence.”

The subpoena comes more than a year after the commission began investigating its role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and despite a general consensus that the former president will not obey.

The commission has already questioned dozens of people in the president’s orbit and previously said it was still considering suing Trump or former Vice President Mike Pence.

If the subcommittee votes on Thursday to subpoena Trump, that subpoena will expire at the end of this congressional term, that is, in December.

In its broad investigation, the committee conducted more than 1,000 interviews and statements and issued 100 subpoenas.

Ranking member Liz Cheney said Thursday’s hearing would focus on Trump’s “state of mind” and “intention” to redirect the Capitol riots and take steps to reverse the election.

The committee delved into previously unseen material to demonstrate the president’s mindset to the public.

In an interview, former White House communications director Alyssa Farah said that at one point after the election, Trump looked up at the TV screen where President Biden was talking and said, ‘Can you believe I lost to this damn dude?’

Trump also ordered a complete withdrawal from both Afghanistan and Somalia on November 11, 2020, effective January 11, 2021, just days before the January 20 inauguration. Committee members claimed this proved Trump knew he had lost and that he would not be able to withdraw troops in a second term. The order was never carried out, as Trump’s senior defense officials warned against it.

Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide, recalled a conversation between her longtime boss, ex-chief of staff Mark Meadows, and Trump, after the election.

She recalled Trump saying “something along the lines of, ‘I don’t want people to know we lost, Mark. This is embarrassing. Figure it out.”
