Janet Jackson was supposed to be honored at the Grammy Awards… but talks broke down after she asked CBS to apologize for the Super Bowl 38 wardrobe malfunction.
During last weekend’s Grammy Awards, Dr. Dre accepted the Global Impact Award, with Missy Elliot, Lil Wayne and music executive Sylvia Rhone also accepting the award… though the Recording Academy planned to hand out one more award. .. to Janet Jackson. .
The 56-year-old singer was slated to receive the award, though talks ultimately broke down because CBS never apologized for its treatment of her after the unfortunate wardrobe malfunction at Super Bowl 38 in 2004, via TMZ.
The Recording Academy first wanted to award him the honor at a pre-Grammy event with Black Music Collective, though Jackson was unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts.
Dre accepted the award during the nearly four-hour Grammy ceremony, though the Recording Academy discussed presenting Jackson with the award during the broadcast as well.
However, that presented another problem as CBS never apologized for withdrawing Jackson’s Grammy invitation after his infamous wardrobe malfunction at Super Bowl 38 in 2004, which aired on CBS.

Jackson was performing with Justin Timberlake during the Super Bowl 38 halftime show when Timberlake ripped Jackson’s top, briefly exposing his chest on live television.
While it was Timberlake who ripped the top, CBS apparently blamed Jackson for the incident, and they have never apologized in the last 19 years.
That still apparently hasn’t sat down well with Jackson, with her team and the Recording Academy trying to figure out a way for CBS to either apologize to Jackson or acknowledge how they treated her after the locker room malfunction.
In the end, the talks turned out to be too complicated, and Jackson did not even receive the award.
She didn’t attend the Black Music Collective or the Grammys, in fact, she hasn’t been to the Grammys in many years.
The issue was the subject of a 2021 Hulu documentary titled Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson, where it was revealed that CBS head Les Moonves wanted an in-person apology from Jackson, but she refused.
Timberlake, on the other hand, showed up at the CBS offices in Los Angeles and apologized to Moonves.
While Timberlake was invited to attend and perform at that year’s Grammys, Jackson’s invitation was apparently rescinded.
