“Sometimes things happen that you don’t expect to happen, and you have to figure things out, or you’re in a space in your life where you need to step back and take a minute of break.
“Even though it’s something I absolutely love, it’s still my job, my job. ‘Sometime there will be music. When exactly? I can’t say it yet, but it will come.
“I love it too much not to.”
Mother-of-one Janet – born Janet Damita Jo Jackson – is said to have added about her focus on raising her son Eissa Al Mana, five, who she had with ex-husband Wissam Al Mana: ‘There’s so much I want to do, but my main job is being a mom.’
Janet also told the 25th anniversary party at Shoreditch House, London, that the first time anyone showed appreciation for her music was when a fan waved one of her CDs at her in traffic.
She said, ‘I would say of all the albums I’ve made, and especially with Jimmy [Jam] and Terry [Lewis – the record’s producers]the [‘The Velvet Rope’] was the hardest album for me.
“I’ve been through so much in my life and it was so deep, I was trying to figure out who I am and where I stand.
“I didn’t know if my fans would like it, but one of the best moments of my life associated with this album?
“The day it was released I was in traffic coming out of Malibu and someone was honking, and I happened to look up and there was a girl in the car and she held up the CD ‘The Velvet Rope’ and she smiled at me .
“It made me feel so good. That was the first person to admit to me, ‘Yeah, you’ve done something I really appreciate’, and 25 years later, it’s number 1 again today?
‘Thank you so much for this. Thank you Jimmy and Terry for always being my two fathers. You were always there for me through thick, thin and the worst.’
‘The Velvet Rope’ had a huge worldwide impact, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and yielding No1 hits such as ‘Together Again’, ‘I Get Lonely’ and ‘Every Time’, and has been listed as one of Rolling Stone magazine’s ‘500 Greatest Albums of All Time’.
