Jamie Vardy has signed a one-year deal with Leicester, extending his stay at the club beyond his 38th birthday.

Mail Sport revealed on April 30 that Vardy had held talks with the Foxes over a new contract and the deal has now been reached to ensure the 37-year-old gets another shot at the Premier League.

Vardy scored 20 goals to help Leicester immediately return from the Championship last season and his story at the club is one of the most memorable in the history of modern football.

Vardy played non-league football until his mid-20s, but after joining Leicester from Fleetwood Town he developed into one of the country’s best strikers, winning the Premier League Golden Boot in 2020 and playing for England in the semi-final of the World Cup. two years earlier.

When Vardy lifted the FA Cup in 2021, he became the first player to have played in every round of the competition, from the first qualifying stages to the Wembley showpiece.

However, the deal still needs to be approved by the Premier League. Leicester face a possible points deduction next season for breaching spending rules and it is thought they will have to sell players this month to ensure they meet profitability and sustainability rules for the 2021-2024 accounting period.

The League charged Leicester in March over an alleged breach, although they avoided a points deduction last season for not competing at the top flight.

Leicester may have to sell Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to comply with PSR rules

In April the club announced staggering losses of almost £90 million and while the departure of some big earners such as Kelechi Iheanacho will ease pressure on wages, they may have to sell homegrown star Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

The midfielder has attracted interest from Brighton and any transfer fee would count as pure profit under PSR rules.
