Jamie Theakston, 54, reveals he is cancer free after undergoing three life-changing surgeries as he makes an emotional return to Heart FM breakfast
Jamie Theakston has revealed he is cancer free as he joyfully returned to work at Heart FM Breakfast on Friday morning.
The 54-year-old radio host announced in October 2024 that he had been diagnosed with stage 1 laryngeal cancer, after listeners noticed something was not quite right with his voice.
Laryngeal cancer is a form of cancer that affects the voice box (larynx).
After undergoing three life-changing operations and being told he had ‘a one in six chance he might not be able to speak again’, Jamie revealed he is free from the disease and will be back on radio full-time next Monday .
He said: ‘Today marks four months since I was diagnosed with cancer. So it’s been four months and I’m tired of the hospitals and surgeries, and it’s just wonderful to be back, and I have news for you. Because I can tell you that as of today I am cancer free.
“Anyone who’s been through what I’ve been through knows it’s nice of you to just get a barrage of statistics.

Amanda Holden was thrilled to have Jamie back in the studio by her side after four months off battling the disease
‘So they’ll always tell you the first time: when I got my diagnosis, which by the way came as a huge shock, I was supposed to be told I had a sore throat.
“And when I was told, ‘Oh, it’s probably cancer,’ I literally didn’t even know what to say. I mean, it just blew my mind. And then it’s all about statistics. So the first one is, ‘well, you have a one in ten chance of not surviving.’
“And you’re like, ‘Oh, okay, I’ll take that.’ And then I had to do several operations. So the first operation was not as successful as we had hoped. I had a second surgery, and then a third surgery, and each time caused more and more damage to my vocal cords.
“So basically the third time they said, ‘Well, look, there’s a one in six chance that you might not be able to talk anymore.’
“And then you kind of think, ‘oh, okay, that’s like rolling the dice’, yeah, I guess so. And so there’s just kind of, it’s just statistics after statistics.”
Taking to Instagram, Jamie wrote: ‘Nice try cancer but I’m still here! CANCER FREE.
‘Difficult roads can lead to beautiful destinations, and after 3 operations and 4 months of voice therapy I’m back baby!!

When he revealed his diagnosis last year, Jamie said: ‘Hi folks, as you know I recently had surgery to remove a lesion from my vocal cords.
‘The biopsy identified this as stage 1 laryngeal cancer. So I have cancer, but cancer doesn’t have me!
‘The prognosis is very positive and I hope to be with you again in October. Until then, I’ve been told to rest my voice and leave you in the mostly capable hands of JK and Amanda.
‘Huge thanks to them and the whole Global family who have been incredibly supportive. Be thankful for this day, and when I see you again, I will have a great story to tell.”
