Jamie Oliver discusses secret health battle as he reveals slipped discs left him unable to stand for more than 40 seconds at a time

Jamie Oliver has revealed that a series of disc injuries sometimes left him unable to stand for more than 40 seconds at a time.

The celebrity chef, 48, opened up about his health struggles while discussing his workout routine.

Speak with The Sunday Times Magazine, he said: ‘I’m just getting back to normal exercise as I’ve had three hernias for four years. It’s about managing it; my job doesn’t allow me to not work.

“If I stop, this whole thing will fall apart. I’ve had weeks where I could only stand for forty seconds at a time.’

Jamie added that he has learned to manage the problem with some medical attention.

He said, ‘If I smell it now, I’ll go straight to my doctor and he’ll stick a bloody big needle in my back.’

A herniated disc occurs when a soft cushion of tissue between the bones in your spine pushes out.

It is painful when it presses on the nerves, but usually gets better with rest, gentle exercise and painkillers.

Jamie also discussed his daily routine, saying he wakes up at 4.30am and works out with a personal trainer before work.

He usually comes home around 8:30 PM and tries to prepare dinner for the family within 15 minutes, because he feels that the “art of cooking” is dying.

It comes after Jamie revealed the vow renewal ceremony meant more to him than his actual wedding day.

The chef married model Jools in 2000 and the couple have five children: Poppy, 21, Daisy, 20, Petal, 14, Buddy, 12, and River, seven.

In April, three months before their 23rd wedding anniversary, the couple flew to the Maldives with their brood and renewed their vows on the beach.

Speaking about the ceremony on The Graham Norton Show, Jamie said: ‘It was my wife’s idea and I thought I would go along with it.

“Saying the vows a second time actually meant more: You earned it instead of just saying it, and I loved it.” It was actually a lot of fun to do, very romantic, and I ended up enjoying it more than anyone else.”

For the special occasion, Jamie looked dapper in a blue blazer and matching trousers, teamed with a crisp white shirt and a flower lapel.

Jools, 48, looked elegant in an off-the-shoulder wedding dress, complete with ruffles and a thigh-high slit.

Jamie later shared photos from the ceremony on Instagram, writing: ‘Good morning everyone, me and @joolsoliver got married again!

‘Yes, after 23 years together, we thought it would be a special moment to celebrate the renewal of our wedding vows before the kids all leave the nest.

‘It was really special, funny and romantic, with the words in the ceremony making more sense because they had come so far together.

‘It seems like a blink of an eye since the first wedding which we held very privately, apart from the paparazzi in the village church which we thought would be a happy and joyful moment to share with you all this Easter.

‘We always dreamed of going to the Maldives and it was exactly as you dreamed, simply amazing! thank you so much to the whole team at @discoversoneva for amazing and making this moment so special and memorable big love guys Jamie x’
