Jamie Carragher’s cheeky dig at Man United BACKFIRES after they mount unlikely comeback from two goals down to stun Aston Villa

Jamie Carragher saw a small strike against Manchester United backfire after they stormed back from two goals down to stun Aston Villa.

The Liverpool legend couldn't resist a post on social media at half-time as Erik ten Hag's side trailed 2-0 against Villa on Tuesday evening.

He wrote: 'Liverpool play Man Utd at home and it's their worst result of the season.'

It referred to the goalless draw between the two arch-rivals at Anfield earlier this month, in which Jurgen Klopp's side failed to score despite 34 shots on target.

At that stage of the evening United were in desperate trouble after goals from John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker put high-flying Villa in complete control.

But United, staring at their fourteenth defeat of the season in all competitions, rallied brilliantly with two goals from Alejandro Garnacho to draw them level before Rasmus Hojlund scored his first Premier League goal to win the match .

The victory puts United in sixth place in the table, five points clear of the top four and eleven points behind leaders Liverpool, who won 2-0 at Burnley on Boxing Day.

Carragher's fellow Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville tweeted: 'Brilliant second half Man United'.

Ten Hag, whose position is under close scrutiny following Sir Jim Ratcliffe's investment in the club, will hope his team can build on this much-needed win at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Hojlund, who cost United £72 million to sign from Atalanta in the summer, had scored five goals during their short-lived Champions League campaign but had failed to score in 16 home games until his late winner here.

'Of course I have had several conversations with him and each time I have pointed out that he has scored a lot for Denmark, he has scored in the Champions League, he has shown his ability, so you can do it, believe me' Tien Hag said about the 20-year-old Dane.

“I'm sure now that he's scored the first goal, he'll score even more…”

'If a striker doesn't score it's a problem, but he has a strong character, he's so solid and determined. He has a great personality. I think this is what a striker needs. If you keep investing, the goals will come naturally.'

After the dramatic comeback, Ten Hag opened up about what he told the team during the break, indicating that faith played a key role in their recovery.

“The atmosphere changed a lot from the first half to the second half, but if you look at the first half, you lose because of two set plays, at times when we weren't so focused,” the Dutchman told Amazon Prime.

'I think we played quite well in the first half and kept trying and trying. During half-time I said to the team: 'keep believing and keep doing what we did, actually do even more'.

'We had to apply more and more pressure. When we applied pressure at 1-2, you see what happened.

'I said before the game that we were competitive with Arsenal and competitive with Liverpool, so if we do our best we can beat anyone. Believe that even if you are two nil down, it doesn't matter.

“Go on, show character, and today they showed we have the personality to do it. I think it was a really good team effort.”
