Jamie Carragher has claimed Cristiano Ronaldo is trying to be sacked by Manchester United after the attacker’s recent bombshell interview.

Ronaldo accused United of ‘betraying’ him and said he ‘disrespects manager Erik ten Hag’ in an extraordinary attack on the club in clips aired Sunday night from an interview with Piers Morgan.

On Sky Sports, Carragher claimed it is “clear” Ronaldo “wants to be fired” before suggesting that the club should give him what he wants for their own benefit.

“I just thought the comments were bizarre,” said the former Liverpool defender.

“They were out of order, given the timing of it and on the back of Manchester United conceding a winning goal on the final kick of the game. [against Fulham]. It gives them excitement for the next month for when the competition starts again.

“He wants to be fired, that’s clear. He told the club in the summer he wanted to leave, that’s football – these things happen. There were no buyers, perhaps because of his wages or the price Manchester United wanted.

“I think he knows it will be the same in the next transfer window and maybe next summer and he’s now trying to get fired or leave for free. That’s the only way he’ll get out.

United don’t need the hassle of Ronaldo. I think they should fire him or move him by giving him a free transfer. Right now they’re trying to build something that’s not trying to win the Premier League or the Champions League right now. The manager will be pushing for that honor for the next two or three years and Ronaldo will not be there.”

Carragher continued to berate the attacker, calling him a ‘distraction’ and saying it was always a ‘big mistake’ to bring him back to the club after a 12-year absence.

“He will be a distraction, this is not going away,” added Carragher. “Once a player comes out and says he disrespects the manager, how is that going to work when he walks into the first day of the post-World Cup season?

“It can’t work like this in the future. United don’t need the hassle. That’s exactly why I said 18 months ago that bringing Ronaldo to the club was a huge mistake. This was always going to happen.

“They should be enjoying themselves and then the interview with Ronaldo comes out and boom! It’s about negativity, not about the team, not about the manager – it’s about Cristiano Ronaldo. And it’s been that way since he got back. It’s basically been Cristiano Ronaldo’s show.

“It would always end like this. He couldn’t accept being a sub, which in some ways I admire because he has that drive and that’s what made him the great player that he is. This would always explode in the face of United and it was a mistake to bring him back in the first place.”

Piers Morgan, who conducted the interview, replied to Carragher jokingly, “You might change your mind about the interview if you hear what he says about Gary Neville…”

United are now faced with a decision on what to do after the interview, and the club has yet to comment on it, although Erik ten Hag is reportedly meeting with club officials today to discuss penalties.

However, it is believed that fans and players have engaged the attacker, who may now no longer play for the club.
