Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to ‘buy a defender’ after their 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.
Arne Slot’s side extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points, although that could be reduced to four when Arsenal play Tottenham on Wednesday. The Gunners will have played one more game.
They are moving closer to the finish line in their bid to win their second Premier League title in Slot’s first season, but have now drawn two games in a row.
Liverpool have scored by far the most goals in the league this season – 48, at least six more than any other side – but their defensive record has fallen of late, having conceded seven goals in their last five Premier League matches.
Virgil van Dijk remains the heart of the Reds’ defense, with first-choice partner Ibrahima Konate recently returning from injury. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson remain first choice at full-back.
But Chris Wood was the last man to expose the backline when he was played in on the left before scoring on Tuesday, and Carragher took to social media to call for his former side to be strengthened in defence.
“Liverpool should have won tonight but they continue to create big chances even in the games they don’t win,” Carragher wrote of X. “But the defensive solidity they had at the start of the season is gone. It always seems likely that you will give in.’
He concluded the post with: “Buy a defender!!!!”
It seems unlikely that Liverpool will enter the transfer market this month – at least not for anything big – as Slot has cover in all three defensive positions.
