Jamie Carragher has suggested Liverpool should look to appoint a former Premier League boss in place of Arne Slot.

Mail Sport reported on Tuesday that the Reds had made Feyenoord boss Slot their top target to replace the outgoing Jurgen Klopp, and on Wednesday they approached the Eredivisie club about a potential deal.

Slot himself seemed to set things in motion further when he announced on Thursday that he would like to take the job: ‘It is no secret that I would like to go to Liverpool. Now I’m waiting for the clubs to reach an agreement. I have every confidence in that.’

A deal seems more likely by the day as the clubs try to negotiate Slot’s compensation fee.

“The bad news is that the man most capable of overseeing the next step for this Liverpool team is leaving,” Carragher wrote of Klopp. ‘If Klopp was in charge next season, Liverpool would progress and challenge again, both at home and in Europe. With Slot, that absolute faith will make way for hope.

‘That is absolutely not intended as criticism of the new Dutchman. When Klopp announced he was leaving and Xabi Alonso ruled himself out, Liverpool’s options were limited. As brilliant as Slot is – and no one wins a league title or leads a team to a European final without serious qualifications – the next coach would always be highly regarded, but not someone who would necessarily get the pulse racing.

‘There is no one available who can reproduce Klopp’s charisma, authority and natural bond with the supporters – that ‘X-factor’ that is so elusive. Since the Final News came out, I have heard and read many perspectives suggesting that the choice makes tactical sense and that the data on Feynoord’s style makes him a natural fit.

‘I would have more thoroughly considered a coach like Thomas Tuchel, who took on and defeated Pep Guardiola in the ultimate test: a Champions League final. Tuchel followed Klopp at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund and did well. Bayern Munich has not succeeded this season, but you only have to look at Carlo Ancelotti and Unai Emery to recognize how top coaches recover from setbacks.

‘Closing is an agreement made with the head instead of the heart. Klopp’s appeal was for head and heart.’

Liverpool’s season had the potential to be a great final farewell tour for Klopp, who has won both the Champions League and Premier League during his time at the Anfield club.

Hopes of a quadruple were quickly dashed after FA Cup and Europa League losses to Manchester United and Atalanta, and the Premier League title now looks out of reach with back-to-back defeats to Crystal Palace and Everton.

Carragher was critical of his former side’s run-in and suggested they never had ‘the quality’ to win the competition, which is now likely to be won by Arsenal or defending champions Manchester City.

“The quality of champions has never been there,” he wrote. ‘Too many shortcomings to sustain a challenge that in reality has taken longer than expected.

‘Klopp’s successor still has a lot to improve after a season that ultimately promised more than delivered. “No coach arriving at Anfield should consider it an unattainable challenge to make his first year at Liverpool better than Klopp’s.”
