Jamie Carragher has revealed the reason why he believes Mohamed Salah will extend his contract with Liverpool after the end of the season.
Salah has been one of the standout players in Arne Slot’s squad this season, but the Reds could still see the star leave when his contract expires.
Mail Sport reported last week that although the club had finally made a new contract offer to the 32-year-old, an agreement between the two parties is not yet in sight.
Salah had earlier told a group of journalists after Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Southampton that he was ‘more out than in’.
But Carragher remains optimistic about Salah staying at his old club, and shared his thoughts on Thursday’s episode of the Stick with the football podcastbrought to you by Sky bet.
The former Liverpool star made the case for what he said was the main reason why ‘one of the best players in the world’ would remain on Merseyside.
“I love Mo Salah, he is one of the best players in the world, but the reason I say this is because of his age,” Carragher told his co-hosts. “When you have that kind of money and you’re talking about a raise, a raise isn’t ten or twenty thousand dollars a week.
Mohamed Salah is having another strong season for Liverpool, but it could be his last
Jamie Carragher believes the Egypt international will remain at Anfield despite uncertainty over his future
‘How many attackers do that? Real Madrid to have, Barcelona are in financial trouble, PSG are nowhere near the team that Liverpool is – there are only four or five teams who can realistically win Champions League and Liverpool is one of them.
“He will stay because I’m not sure there are too many options. He’s not ready to go to Saudi Arabia yet; he can do that in three years. As a footballer, Salah is so driven to win the record for most goals – or whatever that is for Liverpool.”
One sticking point would be Salah’s wages, which could further limit the options available to the 32-year-old, with Carragher noting that he is ‘reportedly earning around £350,000 to £400,000 a week’.
“Good luck to him, he deserves it, he is one of the best players in the world and should get it,” the pundit continued, before denouncing the player’s lack of transparency over the negotiations.
“But if you come out and say the club didn’t do this and the club didn’t do that, then give us everything (the story) and then we can decide (which side we’re on).
‘If you’re talking about getting a player to this stage of his career, we all get to that stage when you’re 32 or 33, and no one comes to you with 18 months left to talk about a new contract to talk.
“My point is that we know they are in discussions. He did this two years ago when he tried to put pressure on the club.
“He is a world-famous superstar and I really want him to stay, but I look at it from the club’s perspective, where we don’t know who is right or wrong.
In his first season, manager Arne Slot has become highly dependent on the Egyptian international
‘If you want to put something out there for which the club has not yet offered you a contract, tell us what you want, be transparent and we can all take sides.
‘Personally I think he should stay at the same amount and give him a two-year contract. Now the club might offer him one year and he might want three. We don’t know what that is. “I’ve been trying to get information from the club because I knew I would be asked about it, but they’re not giving anything away.”
Carragher said he was ‘disappointed’ in Salah when he dropped his contract bombshell in November, describing the Liverpool striker as ‘selfish’.
Salah scored the winner in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Girona in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
The striker was nervous from the spot as he scored the penalty that would prove to be Spain’s only goal, taking his tally to 16 in all competitions this season, with a further 12 assists.
