Jamie Carragher praised Mykhailo Mudryk after the Chelsea substitute found the net in his side’s 3-2 win at home to Newcastle.

Mudryk has faced some difficult moments since joining Chelsea in January 2023, but the Ukraine international showed impressive composure to take the ball around Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka before scoring.

Carragher stated that despite his struggles, Mudryk is a talented player and expressed hope that this goal could help kick-start the winger’s Chelsea career.

Carragher told Sky Sports: ‘I was just happy that Mudryk scored. It hasn’t been easy for him. Things aren’t going as well for him as he would have liked. It’s shocking from Newcastle. I saw him a few years ago in the Champions League, there is a player there. Hopefully this is the start of something for him.”

After replacing Raheem Sterling in the 71st minute, Mudryk found the net just five minutes later.

Gary Neville also praised Mudryk’s composure after his goal.

Marcel told Sky Sports: “He has been lively since he came, Mudryk. He was positive, he was brave, he took over from Gallagher. It was initially Jackson down his left side. Gallagher doesn’t know Mudryk is there.

‘Mudryk can just sneak it through Schar’s legs, he has the composure to take it around the keeper. It looks like he has taken this game away from Newcastle and that would be a much-needed three points for Chelsea.”

Mudryk’s goal proved important as Chelsea won 3-2 at home against Newcastle.

Nicolas Jackson had given Chelsea the lead before Alexander Isak equalized for the visitors.

Cole Palmer then restored Chelsea’s advantage, which was increased by Mudryk. Jacob Murphy pulled a goal back for Newcastle late on with a brilliant strike, but Chelsea held on to take all three points.

Chelsea remain in eleventh place after the win, but are now just one point behind Newcastle (who are tenth) with a game in hand.
