Jordan Henderson scored England’s first goal in their dominating performance over Senegal, becoming the first Liverpool player to score at the 2022 World Cup.
With Jurgen Klopp’s side under a lot of pressure at home after a difficult start to their Premier League campaign, the World Cup was an opportunity for some of their players to move away from Anfield.
But it wasn’t until the 38th minute with a low shot from Henderson that broke the tie against Senegal that a Liverpool player had scored in Qatar.

As Opta highlighted, the 32-year-old Henderson became England’s second-oldest goalscorer at the World Cup. after his goal. However, he still has some way to go to catch up with record holder Tom Finney, who was 36 when he scored an equalizing penalty five minutes from time against the USSR in 1958.
Henderson was removed to a standing ovation in the 81st minute. He was replaced by Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips with the score 3–0, and no further goals were scored in the round of 16 match.
England met in the early stages of their match against the African Cup of Nations champions at the Al Bayt Stadium. It was a nervous start, which resulted in Henderson’s goal.
Jude Bellingham’s cross was perfect for Henderson to shoot under Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and into the net.
More goals from Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka sealed England’s place in the quarter-final against France, who had beaten Poland 3-1 in the previous match.
It was Jude Bellingham’s (R) pass that set Henderson up for the first goal after 38 minutes.
England’s clash with France is the last of the quarter-finals to be played, Henderson’s side return to the Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday night to take on Kylian Mbappe’s side.
Liverpool currently sit sixth in the Premier League, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal. It’s a far cry from the Reds’ performances in recent seasons, which have seen them battle for the top spot.
Klopp’s side return to competitive play with the League Cup match against Phillips’ City on December 22, ahead of their league clash with Aston Villa on Boxing Day.
