- Jones shone, scoring twice as Liverpool thrashed Leicester on Monday night
- Carragher stressed that the midfielder will have a chance to become an important player
- Jones himself said the performance was one of his best in a red shirt to date
Jamie Carragher has insisted Curtis Jones could see a breakthrough moment in the Liverpool squad.
The 22-year-old scored twice as the Reds beat Leicester 3-0 on Monday night to keep their hopes alive to finish in the top four in what was a dominant game at the King Power Stadium.
He has now started the last nine Premier League games for Jurgen Klopp’s side and looks set to cement his place in the German’s favorite team as the season draws to a close.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher admitted Jones hasn’t always found it easy at Liverpool but is now proving his worth.
“That’s a confident player,” said Carragher. “I think we’re almost seeing that real breakthrough moment now.”

Carragher admitted progress had been slow for Jones, but he could now lay claim to a regular starting spot going forward
“A few years ago there was a period in the team where he was above a few big players. It went really well. It just didn’t happen for him last year and we’ve had a lot of this season where it didn’t happen for him.
“I think in his last six or seven games you think, ‘Okay, maybe there’s more than one team player, one player who could really push for the first team, the night Liverpool bring players in.’
“Oxlade-Chamberlain is going, Keita is going, James Milner is going, he will still play a central role in the future.”
Jones has struggled for consistency since making his first-team debut for the Reds in 2019, and Carragher called on him to show that as he enjoys his new-found form.
The midfielder scored 11 goals in 95 appearances for Liverpool, although 37 of those appearances came as a substitute.
“He needs to bring more consistency,” Carragher said. “He is a player who can sometimes play a little overconfident, he holds the ball too much.
“When he gets the ball and plays two-touch, he has a lot of energy and is a goal threat that Liverpool haven’t really had from midfielders in the past.
“They’ve done a great job for Liverpool, but he has a goal threat, something else. He’s one of those midfielders that Liverpool have who likes to play between the lines.
Jones, alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold, is one of two homegrown players to headline the Reds
“I don’t think a Thiago necessarily does that when he comes back. Jordan Henderson has been doing that for a while, but the midfielders Liverpool have don’t really fit in there, so there are players they are looking for now. play that role.’
When asked if the game against Leicester was one of his best performances for Liverpool, Jones replied: ‘I think so, yes, absolutely.
“It was a game where I had the ball a lot and I scored two, so that’s good. We have the three points and we will continue.
“I was off for 15 weeks, I struggled, so now I’m back and I’m in the team, scoring goals and helping the team. I’ll just try to keep going.’
