Jamie Carragher has criticized Everton after the club mocked former player Anthony Gordon following their goalless draw against Newcastle on Saturday.

Gordon saw a crucial first-half penalty saved by Jordan Pickford as the Magpies failed to break down a stubborn Toffees side at Goodison Park.

The 23-year-old left Everton for £45 million after 11 years at the club in January 2023 after handing in a transfer request and missing a series of training sessions.

His penalty miss delighted Everton supporters across the pitch and on social media, who still loathe Gordon for the manner of his departure.

And Everton took the opportunity to respond boldly to the winger’s misfortunes by posting a video of the missed penalty with a buzzer sound.

The sound is familiar to Toffees fans as it is used when a supporter fails to score during the half-time shows at Goodison Park.

The post, which has been viewed more than seven million times on X, was criticized by former Liverpool defender Carragher, who expressed his anger when he retweeted the video.

He wrote: ‘A local boy who came through your education, helped you stay afloat under Lampard, wanted to leave because the club was a shambles on and off the pitch and who you then sold for £40m. The People’s Club!’

Gordon joined Everton’s academy in 2012 after being released by rivals Liverpool and went on to make 78 appearances for the club.

The winger played an integral role in the Toffees’ survival in the 2021-22 season under then manager Frank Lampard.

His performances for the Merseyside club that year led to much admiration from Blues fans, but that would later fade following his move to the North East.

Following the stalemate, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe wanted to portray Gordon’s overall performance in a positive light.

‘I think Anthony [Gordon] rose to the occasion very well,” he told Match of the Day. ‘His all-round game was very good. He will be disappointed with the punishment. Thanks to Jordan Pickford for the save.’

Gordon has yet to score or assist a goal in the three games he has played against his former club.

The draw puts Newcastle in seventh place in the Premier League after seven games, while Everton is in fifteenth place with five points.
