Jamie Carragher hilariously mocks Man United legend Peter Schmeichel AGAIN during CBS’ Champions League coverage – as he ribs his old foe for suggesting he could serve as assistant coach to Thierry Henry for France U21s

Jamie Carragher couldn’t resist throwing a light-hearted dig at old foe Peter Schmeichel as the pair were on punditry duty for Tuesday night’s Champions League matches.

The pair featured in US broadcaster CBS’ coverage of the European competition for some time together, with the two former professionals frequently bringing up the Manchester United-Liverpool rivalry in their banter.

But this time Carragher had to do a bit of work to make the three-time winning goalkeeper the butt of the joke.

As the pundits took a break, the pair both took the opportunity to congratulate their colleague Thierry Henry on his new role as coach of the France under-21 team.

Schmiechel praised the Arsenal legend, saying: “I’m so happy for you and your new job. It’s going to be exciting to watch. You can coach at the Olympics.

As Henry thanked his old Premier League rival – and was called out by co-host Micah Richards for “blushing” at the compliments – Schmeichel then suggested he could join him as assistant manager.

Ready to let himself be torn apart, Carragher rushed in with a jibe, adding with a laugh: “(Schmeichel would be) the only assistant in history to have a longer team discussion than the manager!”

But rather than take the bait, Schmeichel admitted: “Yeah, probably, yeah,” agreeing with the former Liverpool player.

The latest round of gentle teasing between the pair follows an incident in March in which Carragher, who played for the Reds for 17 years, reveled in the infamous 7-0 scoreline as Man United met Liverpool at Anfield .

The former defender happily tried to bring up the number seven as much as possible in a conversation ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund with the former goalkeeper, even bringing a can of 7-Up with it him in the studio.

Carragher highlighted the date – “March 7” as well as a potential “seven-figure” price tag for then-Dortmund starlet Jude Bellingham.

Continuing to tease Schmeichel, who made 400 appearances in his United career, Carragher went on to ask: “Peter, you’re going to be at AC Milan tomorrow, how big of a problem would it be if they came out of the Champions League?

“We are talking about the seven times winners, I mean seven times winners of the Champions League.”

As Carragher sought more and more inventive ways to evoke the demolition of the Red Devils on the road, Schmeichel finally began to see the funny side of his question.

After receiving everyone’s congratulations before kick-off, Henry explained in a little more detail why he had accepted the coaching job with France, which he will do alongside his punditry duties for CBS.

Schmeichel already had to respond to a barrage of mockery over Man United's 7-0 defeat to Liverpool while covering a Chelsea match last season.

“I have evolved since I was a coach at Monaco, I have learned more empathy, to be more vulnerable with your players and to trust my staff,” explained Henry.

“Yes, I had doubts (after Monaco), and that’s completely normal. When you’re on the bench and you have doubts, you see things differently. One thing is really important: it takes time to put something in place.

Henry took charge of the Principality for an uneven period between October 2018 and January 2019 after working as assistant coach of the Belgian national team.

The French legend enjoyed more success managing Montreal Impact in MLS between 2019 and 2021, but the challenges of dealing with Covid-19 ultimately forced him to step down.
