Jamie Carragher explains why Man United’s thrilling draw with Liverpool was a ‘win’ for new boss Ruben Amorim

Jamie Carragher has praised Man United for their performance against Liverpool.

The arch-rivals played out a thrilling encounter at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, with both teams taking the lead before the match eventually finished 2-2.

The result was something of a shock as United came into the match having lost their past four games in all competitions, including a demoralizing 2-0 defeat to Newcastle last week.

Despite their terrible form, Ruben Amorim’s side caused Liverpool a lot of problems and deserved their point.

Amorim has been steadfast in his desire to play in his preferred 3-4-3 formation since leaving Sporting Lisbon for Old Trafford in November, but the system has regularly left United woefully exposed.

However, Liverpool struggled at times to cope with United on Sunday and after the meeting Carragher praised the Portuguese’s defiance over his preferred style of play – and insisted he was seeing plenty of signs of progress at Anfield.

“This game was almost a win system-wise for the manager,” he said on Monday Night Football.

‘He hasn’t been ridiculed, but questions have been asked about whether he can play that way and whether he has the players to play that system.

“This is a man who is now on his third job as a manger. He has managed more than 200 matches. He has never played a back four, so forget the idea that he will change to a back four.

‘The Man United hierarchy brought him here from Sporting because of the way he played at Sporting. So they have to arrange that properly. It’s not about him changing.’

Meanwhile, Amorim has regularly referred to the lack of training time he has had to work on his system since joining United, given United’s hectic schedule.

However, United were given six days to prepare for the match against Liverpool after facing Newcastle last Monday.

And Carragher acknowledged the changes Amorim had made while also wondering whether Liverpool were struggling to rise to the challenge of encountering something different.

“We’ve all been there as players when you’re playing against a different system and you’re not quite sure whether to go there or go there,” he added.

‘And that’s where Liverpool found themselves. Liverpool should still have won, but they never quite got Man United on the rack and the Anfield crowd aside, because they couldn’t push and were always in the middle.

‘That was because of the system and the work they (United) did on the training pitch.

‘And fair play to the manager, he said, “Give me time on the training ground and I’ll make it happen.”

United are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to the Emirates to take on Arsenal in the FA Cup third round, while Liverpool host League Two side Accrington Stanley on Saturday.
