Jamie Carragher claims there’s ‘something not right’ about Liverpool’s front three and suggests Jurgen Klopp may need to dip into the transfer market, with Luis Diaz ‘a shadow of himself’ after knee injuries

  • Jamie Carragher thinks Luis Diaz should have a strong second half of the season
  • Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo also struggled with their form in recent months
  • 'FFive, six, seven years of rock 'n' roll football… have Liverpool fans been spoiled under Jurgen Klopp? It all starts

Jamie Carragher believes there is something wrong with the Liverpool striker and suggested Jurgen Klopp may need to sign a replacement for Luis Diaz.

He was speaking after Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Arsenal, where Mo Salah saved the day with a brilliant strike but the other strikers failed to score for the fifth game in a row.

Diaz failed to score for the seventh Premier League game on the bounce, while Darwin Nunez kept a clean sheet for the twelfth consecutive game in all competitions.

Although Liverpool are still among the league's top scorers with 37 goals in 18 games, they have been reliant on Salah and players from further back to contribute goals in recent weeks.

Carragher told the Gary Neville podcast: 'If you look at Liverpool's front three, something is not right.

'Gakpo has been here for almost 12 months and he has had flashes, but not nearly enough. Diaz seems like a shadow of himself after his knee injuries last season.

'I really feel that Diaz needs to have a good second half of the season, otherwise Liverpool will enter the market on the left this summer. It just feels like Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are gone, they haven't replaced them in terms of quality.

“I know Darwin Nunez started on the bench and his form is poor in terms of goals, but Nunez should almost be the first name on the team sheet.

'Even in the midweek Carabao Cup win over West Ham he creates a goal and creates panic. There's a sense that even if things aren't going well, he can run past someone or make a shot. Somewhere he could do something.

“It feels like we're still making excuses for him, but Liverpool still have a front three at the moment: Salah is your number one, Nunez is your number two and who else is in the front three?”

Diaz was ruled out for most of last season, suffering in October 2022 and not recovering until April.

He has found the net five times this season and assisted once. While he still clearly has immense talent, his end product has suffered since his injury.

Diogo Jota had found his form, but was unable to perform in December due to a muscle injury.

Nunez has missed 15 big chances in the Premier League this season, an overall second only to Erling Haaland's 17.

Although Gakpo, like Nunez, has scored seven goals in all competitions, he has only two in the English top flight and has not scored a league goal in his last nine games.
