Jamie Carragher continued to enjoy his final position in the 2005 Ballon d’Or rankings after the revelation that the former Liverpool defender finished level with Cristiano Ronaldo in the voting.
CBS Sports turned their attention to the Ballon d’Or during their Champions League coverage on Wednesday night, before this year’s winner was announced on Monday.
Presenter Kate Abdo looked back on the 2005 awards with her regular expert team consisting of Thierry Henry, Carragher and Micah Richards.
Henry had finished fourth overall after another fantastic season at Arsenal, having secured 15 votes.
Brazilian great Ronaldinho was crowned winner of the award with 50 votes, followed by England midfielders Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard with 45 and 39 votes respectively.

“You know who else we have to give some credit for how close they were in 2005, the man who finished 20th with Cristiano Ronaldo,” Abdo then said.
“Don’t say Carragher,” Richards replied.
CBS Sports revealed an image showing Carragher tied for 20th in the rankings alongside 18-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, with the pair earning one vote each.
The duo were ranked just below French legend Zinedine Zidane and Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
“Up here, Ronaldo and this guy said I can’t touch him,” responded an excited Carragher.
“I can’t believe that,” Richards replied, while Henry said in surprise, “Zizou 18th and you 20th, that’s it, we’re dead.”
Carragher quickly turned to the cameras and demanded: “Get that out on social media now.”
When asked if he already knew: ‘I knew I was above Ronaldo, but was Zidane one above me?’
Carragher played an important role when Liverpool won the Champions League in 2005
Lionel Messi is expected to be crowned Ballon d’Or winner for the eighth time on Monday
Carragher had played a key role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2005, with the Reds staging an astonishing comeback from a 3-0 defeat to AC Milan in the final.
Liverpool eventually fought back to take the match to penalties before famously triumphing in Istanbul.
Carragher later shared the clip on social media, citing reports that Lionel Messi will be crowned the men’s Ballon d’Or winner for the eighth time on Monday.
Messi is expected to overcome Erling Haaland’s challenge despite the striker scoring a record 52 goals for Man City last season, leading the club to the treble.
The messages prompted Carragher to joke: “I won the CL in 2005, just like Haaland did this season, he will rightly feel how I did it then, robbed!!!”
