Jamie Carragher has rekindled his feud with Rio Ferdinand by saying he is ‘happy calling him a clown’ as he covered the Champions League semi-final with CBS.
The Liverpool hero and Manchester United legend have previously clashed on social media and Carragher reignited the flames by criticizing Ferdinand’s take on a penalty during Inter Milan’s 2-0 win over rivals AC.
Lautaro Martínez went down in the penalty area of AC Milan after a fight with Simon Kjaer. Referee Jesus Gil Manzano immediately pointed to the spot and booked the defender, but disallowed his decision after VAR asked him to consult his monitor.
Ferdinand, who broadcast live for BT Sport from San Siro on Wednesday, said it was a ‘stonewall’ penalty, but Carragher thought otherwise and didn’t spare the former United player from criticism when he explained why.
CBS showed Carragher was outraged by the decision during the first half when they were off the air, where he said: “I think anyone who watches the replay and sees what the VAR does and still believes it’s a penalty , they need a clown.’

Then, back live in the studio, Carragher was shown a Tweet saying his old Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard – who worked on BT Sport with Ferdinand – still thought it was still a penalty.
Carragher replied, “He was an attacking player, wasn’t he?
“He was a little liable himself under a little bit of contact — always contact, never a dive. I understand where he’s coming from.
‘It’s only when players in my position are those defenders, England defenders who comment on the game…’ before Micah Richards intervened, only for Henry to stop him and ask Carragher what he was going to say.
Carragher continued: ‘I can understand attackers thinking it was a penalty (to Thierry Henry) if you did, and Stevie was a striker. Maybe he felt there was a little contact.
“But as a defender, we have to stick together, don’t we, and I just felt people got a little carried away.”
Micah Richards then said, “Name names,” to which Carragher replied, “Rio Ferdinand, I like to call him a clown!”
Henry looked stunned by Carragher’s comments, holding his papers to his face, while Richards said he didn’t want to get involved in any tension between the two.

Carragher and Ferdinand clashed earlier on Twitter last October over Cristiano Ronaldo’s involvement with Manchester United under Erik ten Hag.
Ferdinand joked that Carragher was angry that Ronaldo had refused to shake hands with him on Sky Sports News as he broadcast from Old Trafford.
“No, I’m glad it went viral!” said Carragher. Rio, I know how it works, he’s your buddy and you/Evra and the rest are in the WhatsApp group and he’s asking you to come out and defend him.
“Don’t be his fanboy, you are Rio Ferdinand for FFS!!”
Ferdinand then replied, “Which WhatsApp group?! Go away boy… I want the same energy with Roy Keane as you [sic] next in the studio ffs. Stop being bullied.’
