Jamie Carragher has suggested Liverpool will be unable to compete for the Premier League title due to two areas in which they still need to strengthen.

The Reds were held to a 2-2 draw against Brighton on Sunday afternoon, after a first-half brace from Mohamed Salah rescued a point for Jurgen Klopp’s side at the Amex.

The result moved Liverpool up to third in the top flight and, were it not for the VAR controversy at Tottenham, they could be even higher.

However, despite their strong start to the Premier League season, former Reds defender Carragher suggested the team is still lacking in a few areas.

According to The mirrorCarragher said: “Whether they can go on and win the biggest trophy which is the Premier League, I think it will be difficult.”

“I think it could be something Liverpool could do next season with a few more additions.

“I think Liverpool are missing a great central midfielder and maybe another defender. These gaps will be filled whether it’s January or summer. I think they will be better equipped next season to play in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s search for midfield reinforcements has been well documented this summer, having been faced with the signings of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia – both of whom opted to join rivals Chelsea.

Instead, the Reds managed to bring in Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich and Wataro Endo from Stuttgart in a bid to bolster their midfield depth.

This follows a number of departures from the club this summer, such as Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Despite a new team for the campaign, Liverpool still managed to record 17 points from a possible 24.

Reflecting on their debut, Carragher also said: “It’s been a promising start to the season. And it looks like in the first few weeks, the team he’s building can hopefully continue to achieve what his previous teams have done.

Following the controversy at Tottenham which saw Liverpool’s Luis Diaz have a goal unfairly ruled out for offside, Jurgen Klopp refused to get drawn into another VAR discussion after Brighton Midfielder Pascal Gross escaped a red card in Sunday’s 2-2 draw.

Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards says the Brighton midfielder should have been sent off for his foul on Dominik Szoboszlai.

Gross awarded a penalty for pushing the Hungarian back inside the box when he was the last man. But he did not receive a red card following a VAR review.

Then Klopp said: “I don’t know. I don’t know, I think if the foul is inside the box for a penalty it’s a yellow card but if it’s outside it could be red. I don’t know, don’t talk to me about periods. I take what I get.
