As previously reported, DC Comics did not have a presentation scheduled for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con because, as DC boss James Gunn put it, he is too busy directing his new version of SupermanWe wondered if DC would find other ways to make some big reveals at the expo, and sure enough, the “Jim Lee & Friends” panel made its debut at the first teaser trailer for Being Commandsthe animated Max series that is set to kick off Gunn’s new DC film and TV continuity. The series will feature yet another roster for Amanda Waller’s Suicide Squad — this time with a lineup made up entirely of non-humans.
Aside from the fact that he may finally be able to explain what’s going on with Weasel, the wide-eyed, strange apparition voiced and acted in the live-action film by Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn The Suicide SquadThe animated series features Viola Davis returning to her role as Amanda Waller (previously seen in Peacemaker, Black Adamand both Suicide Squad films), along with colleagues Peacemaker veteran Steve Agee as John Economos.
The rest of the animated series cast includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, and Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky. Sean Gunn also voices GI Robot.
This is the beginning of an era that James Gunn called the world’s. “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” and it’s meant to set the tone for DC’s upcoming live-action films and TV series, though it does share a bit of a common vibe with Max’s Harley Quinn also. The first season will run for seven episodes and premiere in December, though no specific date has been given. DC’s official series description only hints at the humor in the series:
Being Commands follows a secret team of imprisoned monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. If all else fails… they’re your last, worst option.
