James Gunn debunks rumors that he spoke with Henry Cavill to play Frankenstein’s monster

DC Studios boss James Gunn is debunking another report about the future of the DC Extended Universe, involving former Superman Henry Cavill.

Cavill announced in October, after his cameo in Black Adam, that he would return as Superman.

However, just weeks later, James Gunn and Peter Safran stepped in to take over DC Studios, with the actor revealing in December that he would not be returning as Superman.

A new report from cursed giant robot appeared claiming that Gunn had talked to Cavill about another role, with the site claiming that his “immediate guess” was the Frankenstein monster in the upcoming Creature Commandos animated series.

Various other online publications began to post the news, with one fan sharing a link to a site called Koi Moi with Gunn, asking if it was “true or false”, and Gunn quickly debunking the report.

Not Returning: However, just a few weeks later, James Gunn and Peter Safran stepped in to take over DC Studios, with the actor revealing in December that he wouldn’t be returning as Superman.

‘Completely false. We have our Frankenstein, our first choice, and it’s not Henry. It was never argued with him. #CreatureCommandos,” Gunn said in a tweet.

Another fan nicknamed @capenerdbro responded to Gunn, saying: ‘I know you’re just responding to false information, but you seem to hate Henry Cavill. That post got no traction anyway.

Gunn replied: ‘It’s on various news sites and they asked me about it. You might consider that this bile that you think is coming out of my post has more to do with your framing than what I’m actually saying. I’ve said in the past that we’ve discussed other roles with Henry, only Frankenstein isn’t one of them.

Creature Commandos was one of ten new projects Gunn announced in the first part of his Chapter 1 of the new DC Universe (DCU) slate.

Gunn himself wrote the seven-episode animated series, which is already in production, though none of the voice cast members have been announced.

Gunn revealed in his announcement that Creature Commandos will be the first project to come out, revealing that unlike in the past, the live-action and animated projects will all be linked.

“What we’re doing with the DCU is having animation tied directly to the live action,” Gunn said in late January.

‘TV, movies and games are intertwined in the same universe. We’re going to cast actors who can play the characters in this as well as other things, some of which we’ve already cast,” he continued, adding that he has written all seven episodes of Creature Commandos and production is underway.

Bile: Gunn replied, “It’s on various news sites and they asked me about it.” He might consider that this bile that he thinks is coming out in my post has more to do with his framing than what I’m actually saying. He also revealed an image revealing the team, with Rick Flag Sr., who will “be appearing in other stuff,” along with Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, who he said is “the lead,” and finally G.I. Robot and Weasel.

Creature Commandos debuted in Weird War Tales #98 in November 1980, created by JM DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, with the original team set during World War II.

Chapter 1 of their slate, dubbed Gods and Monsters, begins with Creature Commandos, an animated series already in production, and a live-action Waller series, following Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller.

The first movie on the slate is Superman: Legacy, slated for a July 11, 2025 release, which Gunn has written and will follow, “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.”

The next project is a TV series called Lanterns, which follows various Green Lantern characters that are said to be similar to True Detective.

Next up is a movie called The Authority, which follows a set of superheroes going to extreme methods.

The Paradise Lost series will be set on the island of Themyscira, where the iconic heroine Wonder Woman was born.

The next project will be The Brave and the Bold, a new Batman movie starring Bruce Wayne’s son with supervillain Talia al-Ghul as Robin, which will not feature Robert Pattinson as Batman.

The Booster Gold TV series will follow, as Safran explained, “a loser from the future who uses basic future technology to come back to the present and pretend to be a superhero,” as Gunn added, “impostor syndrome as a superhero.”

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film project is said to feature a “much more hardcore” Supergirl than has been portrayed in the past.

The horror film Swamp Thing will delve into the origins of the creature and close the first part of Chapter 1.
