James Corden reveals TRUTH behind Gavin And Stacey reunion

James Corden has revealed the truth behind the prospect of a reunion between Gavin and Stacey, which is sure to leave fans heartbroken.

The star, 44, who wrote and starred as Smithy on the beloved show alongside co-creator Ruth Jones who played his love interest Nessa Shanessa Jenkins, has spoken out about the chances of the characters reuniting.

Speaking of the possibility of a return to show — shortly before stepping down as host of The Late Late Show after eight years — he admitted that the distance between the couple means they couldn’t write at a distance.

He told The Sun: “To be honest, Ruth and I met at Christmas… and I know it’s going to be a disappointment, but we haven’t talked about it in lifeforms. We talked about who we’d been talking to from the cast lately, but that was about it.”

James, who said he only thinks about his characters when he’s with Ruth, added: “It’s about whether we decide to get into a room together and honestly I couldn’t tell you how likely that is . We must both be clear and right.’

Gavin And Stacey first aired in 2007 and ran for just 21 episodes, spanning three seasons and two Christmas specials. The popularity of the show was stratospheric with the 2019 Christmas special drawing a whopping 18.49 million viewers.

Rumors have long circulated about the possibility of another series or special, but James seems unwavering in his stance.

He said, “It’s great that people loved the characters so much and when I get back home and talk to the taxi drivers they say, ‘You’ve done well for yourself’…

‘It’s beautiful. But now people just want a good show. I’m not thinking about it [Smithy and Nessa’s future] until Ruth and I are in a room.

‘We can’t write at a distance; we tried when I was in New York with The History Boys and we tried Skype, but it didn’t work.

“What matters is if we decide to get into a room together and honestly I couldn’t tell you how likely that is. We must both be clear and right.’

Speaking to Lorraine on Monday, James added: “Gavin and Stacey, Ruth is one of my best friends and I saw her at Christmas and we haven’t even talked about it…

‘Normally [in LA at The Late Late Show] there’s a Brit in the crowd and 3 days out of 4 they ask me about Smithy and Nessa. We won’t do it unless we think we can do it without disappointing people

Last month, Matt Horne, who played the titular character Gavin, put a stop to speculation about a Gavin and Stacey reunion, admitting it would be difficult to get some “successful people” on board.

The actor, 43, claimed fans yearning for the comedy’s return “isn’t reason enough”, adding that the writers “want to make sure they have a story first.”

He added how difficult it was to get the ensemble together for the 2019 Christmas special, which was later named the most watched non-sporting event in a decade.

He said: ‘Clearly the BBC wants more. James [Corden] and Ruth [Jones] have always said they would only do more if they had a story and a reason to do it.

“Just because people want it isn’t enough reason to do it for them. They want to make sure they have a story. They don’t want to let the play and the audience down. They don’t just want to do it for the sake of doing it.

“I really don’t know if they plan to do more.”
