James Bond producer says there is a ‘long road ahead’ before Daniel Craig’s 007 successor is chosen and they haven’t even started ‘modernizing’ the franchise

James Bond is one of the longest-running franchises in film history, although those scrambling to see who the new 007 will be will have a long wait.

Producer Barbara Broccoli – who, along with half-brother Michael G. Wilson, has owned the James Bond franchise since 1995 – teased a “long way to go” for the casting.

Daniel Craig quit two years ago after a fifteen-year stint that included six films: Casino Royale (2006), Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), Specter (2015) and No Time To Die (2021).

Broccoli was promoting her new 007-inspired reality series 007: Road to a Million, which debuts on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, November 10.

While fans have been clamoring for answers for the past two years, Broccoli revealed their work to discover that a new 007 hasn’t even truly begun yet.

There are often significant differences between different Bond eras, including the six-year gap between Timothy Dalton’s last 007 film, 1989’s License to Kill, and Pierce Brosnan’s first film, 1995’s Goldeneye.

There was also a four-year gap between Brosnan’s fourth and final film – 2002’s Die Another Day and Craig’s first, Casino Royale.

Now that No Time to Die is almost two years away, Broccoli stressed that the new film should reflect how the world has changed since Craig took over 007.

‘I go back to GoldenEye when everyone said “the cold war is over, the wall is over, Bond is dead, Bond is not needed, the whole world is at peace and now there are no villains” – and he was wrong !’ Broccoli said.

She added that when they cast Craig, they “ffocus on what a 21st century hero would look like.’

“Daniel gave us the opportunity to mine the emotional life of the character… and the world was ready for it too,” she added.

“I think these films reflect the times they’re in, and there’s a big, big way to go to reinvent it for the next chapter, and we haven’t even started on that yet,” she said.

Broccoli and Wilson produce the Amazon series 007: Road to a Million, which sends nine couples on a global adventure with Brian Cox playing “The Controller” who dictates what to do.

Broccoli said the show has “the same ethos of heroism, courage and fortitude as the movies… I think it’s really good entertainment and that’s what people need.”

She added that the show was “fun and fun to do in the meantime” as they prepare for the future of the film franchise, but don’t expect more TV.

‘Our focus is on making feature films. When we start a Bond film, it requires our full attention for three or four years, so that’s our focus.

“We make the Bond films for the big screen and everything about the Bond films is on that format for audiences around the world, so we didn’t want to make television,” she said.
