New Orleans quarterback James Winston has revealed his deep disappointment at losing his starting position to Week 1 backup Andy Dalton.

Winston has not returned to the field – despite recovering sufficiently from a back injury – after Dalton took over as starter in Week 4 vs. Minnesota.

The former Tampa quarterback is ready to play, but has not been chosen by head coach Dennis Allen to usurp Dalton.

“I lost my job through injury and the policy has always been that you don’t lose your job through injury. And that’s what happened,” Winston told reporters on Friday.

“I wear that shirt that says ‘big team, little me’ even though it hurts my heart. It hurts my soul the way it turned out this year, but it is what it is.’

Allen admitted earlier this week that he was considering putting Winston back in the starting position for their game vs. the LA Rams Sunday.

Despite the personal blow to Winston, he is determined to do whatever it takes to help the 3-7 Saints through means other than his game.

“What’s going on right now is what I’m dealing with right now and what I need to focus on right now,” he said.

“I’ll deal with what’s going on now, and when that time comes when I finally get back on the field, which I hope I will, I’m going to support Andy.

“I’m going to support this attack, I’m going to support everyone on this offensive staff as best I can, and that’s all.”

While there were concerns about how healthy Winston really is, he dispelled any doubts and suggested he’s ready to roll.

‘I’m healing. I haven’t played. This is the best cure I can get.’

New Orleans currently ranks ninth in the league, scoring an average of 22.2 points per game.
