Jalen Hurts ‘deserves every penny’ of stunning new $255 MILLION contract with Philadelphia Eagles, Stephen A. Smith insists as he responds to QB’s highest-paid deal in NFL history
Stephen A. Smith believes Jalen Hurts fully deserves the $255 million five-year mega contract he has agreed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Hurts, 24, has become the highest-paid player in NFL history after agreeing to terms, which were announced Monday.
And speaking on ESPN, Smith praised Hurts for the improvement he has shown since being drafted in the second round by the Eagles in 2020.
“The fact that Jalen Hurts has been awarded this contract is news, congratulations,” said Smith.
“He deserves every penny. He has earned it not only for his exceptional play on the field, but also for his leadership and the growth and maturity he has shown.

The 24-year-old Hurts was awesome last season as the Eagles headed to the Super Bowl
“To be a second-round guy, come into this league as a backup, win the starting job, get to the playoffs together and lose to Tom Brady and then continue his maturation and training beyond the season, and dismissing the skeptics and what they said about him is an evaluating position.
“He deserves this money and Nicole Lynn, his agent, congratulates her. Major, major props to her for pulling this off, she had to do it.”
The Eagles confirmed the groundbreaking news in a tweet Monday morning, saying, “Keeping the most important thing in Philly. We have agreed with Jalen Hurts on a five-year extension through the 2028 season.”
According to NFL Network, he is guaranteed $180 million in the deal and about $15 million in incentives for the season.
His new deal also apparently includes a no-trade clause, which would be the first in Eagles history.
Hurts led the Eagles to the Super Bowl last season, but they were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs.
The $255 million deal dwarfs the total value the Cleveland Browns paid for Deshaun Watson last year at $230 million, though that contract is fully guaranteed.
Hurts’ most recent season was his best, despite tasting a Super Bowl loss – Hurts completed 66.5% of his passes for 22 touchdowns and six interceptions, plus another 760 yards and 13 TDs rushing.
