Jake Paul and Mike Tyson handed suspensions from boxing after controversial fight in Texas

  • Jake Paul defeated Mike Tyson via unanimous decision after eight rounds
  • The fight was one of little action and received a lot of criticism from fans

Jake Paul and Mike Tyson have both been officially banned from boxing after their controversial fight in Texas on Friday night.

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has a rule stating that every fighter must rest three days before each round fought.

The fight at AT&T Stadium lasted the full eight rounds, meaning neither man will be allowed to fight for 24 days.

YouTuber boxer Paul secured a unanimous points victory over the 58-year-old in a disappointing affair.

The show caused outrage among some fight fans – both before and after Tyson struggled to get a glove on Paul for eight two-minute rounds.

The 27-year-old social media star was in control during the fight with Tyson, who is 31 years his senior, and revealed after the fight that he didn’t knock him out by choice.

“I’m sorry I didn’t knock him out,” Paul began, and many agreed he did the right thing by not trying to knock out the 58-year-old.

Paul also admitted that he threw his punches after seeing his legendary opponent weaken during the fight.

“After seeing him tired, I didn’t want to hurt him too much, but I wanted the fans to have a good experience,” he continued. ‘But there was a point where my aggression and violence disappeared when I was no longer being hit. I love Mike.’

Paul would have earned $40 million for the fight against Tyson, while Iron Mike would have gotten around $20 million for the fight in Arlington, Texas.

According to MVP, an average of 60 million households are watching the main event live, with as many as 65 million watching simultaneously.

The win took Paul to a professional boxing record of 11-1 – with the only defeat coming against Tommy Fury in February last year – and it is unclear what will come next for the 27-year-old.

Many were surprised that the fight was even sanctioned after it was initially postponed in June when Tyson suffered a flare-up of an ulcer during a cross-country flight.

Last week, Tyson claimed he almost died on that plane and ended up having eight blood transfusions as he recovered from the incident.

So it was no wonder that Paul was the favorite to beat Tyson, who is decades removed from his prime.
