Jadon Sancho’s timekeeping ‘was an issue for England staff’ before he missed out on World Cup place

Jadon Sancho first fell out of favor with England boss Gareth Southgate after being ‘late for a team meeting last year’ – but the omission of the Man United winger from his World Cup squad was ‘purely based on performance’

  • Jadon Sancho initially lost his place in the England lineup due to poor timekeeping
  • Sancho was late for a team meeting before a clash with Andorra in October 2021
  • Gareth Southgate and his England team-mates waited for him to arrive
  • However, he is believed to have missed a World Cup place solely because of his form

Jadon Sancho’s timekeeping was reportedly a problem for the England coaching staff before failing to earn a place on their World Cup squad.

The Manchester United winger failed to make the roster of Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the Qatar tournament, which kicks off against Iran on November 21.

As reported by The Telegraphthe decision to omit Sancho was purely based on appearances.

However, it has emerged that Sancho was late for a team meeting ahead of England’s World Cup qualifier to Andorra in October 2021.

Southgate doesn’t start meetings until all players are present, so he and his team had to wait. Sancho was then left out of England’s next squad.

The 22-year-old has capitulated 23 times by England since his debut in 2018.

But he has not played for the Three Lions since the aforementioned game against Andorra.

In 2018, both Sancho and Phil Foden were dropped from England Under-19 against Latvia after showing up late to pre-match training.

Sancho started the season impressively for United with goals against Liverpool and Leicester, but he hasn’t scored in the league since early September.

While he could potentially be used as an attacking midfielder, Southgate’s preference for a three-man defense and fullbacks rather than fullbacks doesn’t help the United player fit into the team either.

Other players who failed to make the World Cup roster include Tammy Abraham, Ivan Toney, James Ward-Prowse, Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi.

England will face Iran, the US and Wales in the group stage of the tournament.
