EXCLUSIVE: Ivan Toney’s potential England debut will net League One Peterborough United a £1M windfall… increasing the deal that landed him at Brentford in 2020 to £9m after excellent Premier League form
- Ivan Toney joined Brentford from Peterborough for an initial £6m in 2019
- An international debut for the striker would see Posh shell out an extra £1m
- Toney is part of England’s squad to face Italy and Ukraine in the EuroCup qualifiers.
Peterborough United will receive a bonus payment of around £1 million from Brentford if Ivan Toney makes his England debut in this week’s European Championship qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine.
The League One club sold Toney to Brentford for £6m three years ago, but also negotiated a series of lucrative performance-related bonuses, many of which have already been paid for.
An England appearance bonus will be one of the last to kick in following excellent performances from Toney since joining Brentford.
The 27-year-old was called up to the England squad for the first time for last season’s UEFA Nations League matches against Italy and Germany, but did not play and was not selected by Gareth Southgate for the World Cup.
Peterborough have already received over £2.5m in bonuses as a result of Toney’s success at Brentford, and an England bonus would bring the total fee for him to over £9m.

Brentford’s promotion from the Championship two years ago triggered a £1m bonus, and the club paid Peterborough the same amount again after they survived in the Premier League last season.
Peterborough also received smaller payments each time Toney made five Premier League appearances for his new club, although those additional fees were capped at 50 appearances.
In addition, Peterborough has also negotiated a significant sale clause for Toney worth several million which is likely to kick in next season in light of interest from Manchester United and Newcastle.
Brentford had planned to cash in on Toney this summer after he declined to sign a new contract earlier this season, though as sports mail revealed earlier this month that a transfer of more than £50m has been jeopardized by the player’s impending ban for breaching the FA Laws of the Game.
