The TV star, 56, will return to TV tomorrow – just three days after her husband’s funeral – where she will give a moving interview from her home before rejoining her co-host Ben Shepherd on Thursday.

Heartbroken, Kate is keen to keep busy and get back to work, her friends say, after an “incredibly rough” four years caring for Derek, who died last month.

Those close to the mother-of-two said she wants to get back to ‘what she knows and loves’, presenting for ITV, as she continues to mourn Derek.

“Kate has had an incredibly tough time these past few months, and it has taken its toll both mentally and physically,” a friend said. “But she’s a workhorse, and journalism, live on TV, runs through her blood – it’s what she knows and loves.”

They added that she must ‘work to provide for their children’ – Darcey, 17, and William, 14, and ‘bring stability back into their lives’.

The source told the Sun that this was the ‘perfect time’ for Kate to ‘reunite with her GMB family’, who have been ‘hugely supportive’ during the family’s difficult time.

‘After almost four years of caring for Derek and her family, Kate needs to get back to some kind of normality. And she wants to throw herself back into work, it starts at 3:45 am and all,” the friend added.

In her first appearance back, Kate is expected to speak about her husband’s final days and his funeral, which was attended by politicians and celebrities alike.

Kate and her children – Darcey, 17, and William, 14 – leave Derek’s funeral at St Mary’s Church in Primrose Hill on Friday

Kate was last seen on GMB on December 8.

She is scheduled to return full-time for now, but ITV said she could take time off when needed.

It is understood the broadcaster is also offering a duty of care package, including advice if required.

Derek had flown to Mexico on December 8 for specialist treatment for the long Covid-19 period, but suffered a cardiac arrest there and was forced to fly home.

On Friday, Sir Tony Blair, Sir Keir Starmer and Sir Elton John were among those who gathered at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Primrose Hill – where Kate married her partner in 2005 – to farewell the New Labor giant.

Journalist Robert Peston, talent manager Jonathan Shalit, former GMTV political editor and former Labor MP Gloria De Piero and former Sky News political editor Adam Boulton also entered the church.

Kate’s past and present Good Morning Britain colleagues were also in attendance to support her on a tragic day.

Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid were among the first to arrive, followed by Piers Morgan and Charlotte Hawkins.

Fiona Phillips was seen in public with her ITV director Martin Frizell for the first time since she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

Derek’s daughter helped carry her father’s coffin into the building as Sir Elton played a ‘musical tribute’.

There was also a speech from friend Sir Tony Blair and the congregation sang Lord of the Dance and The Lord is My Shepherd.

His children left notes with wreaths on the coffin that read, “I love you with all my heart” and “I love you daddy.”

Kate was last seen on GMB on December 8. For now, she will return full-time, but ITV said she can take time off if necessary.

Derek was one of the first in Britain to become seriously ill with Covid-19 and was admitted to an intensive care unit when the country went into lockdown in March 2020.

He was one of the country’s longest-suffering Covid patients after being hospitalized but never fully recovered after the virus caused long-term damage to his organs and left him requiring round-the-clock care.

Derek had attended few public events in recent years. But he suffered a heart attack before Christmas and never recovered.

Kate revealed that Derek died as she held his hand ‘during the last long hours and as he passed away’ on January 3 at the age of 56 after prolonged symptoms of coronavirus.
