ITV broadcaster Charles Foster dies

ITV Granada reports that broadcaster Charles Foster, who has also appeared on Coronation Street and Emmerdale, has died as the tributes were arriving.

Actor turned ITV presenter Charles Foster has died.

Previously appearing on both Coronation Street and Emmerdale, Charles was the face of Granada TV from the 1970s to the 1990s.

He recently lent his voice to ITV’s Judge Rinder, but has also done voiceover work for Catchphrase and The Krypton Factor.

Charles will also be known to soap fans as Judge Connolly from Emmerdale, whom he played on the ITV show in 2008.

Wirral-born Charles was married to 85-year-old actress Meg Johnson, who appeared in Coronation Street, Brookside and Taggart.

Meg played Pearl Ladderbanks on Emmerdale and appeared in some big storylines, but she hasn’t appeared on the soap since March 2020.

Leading the tributes to Charles, Granada Reports producer Rob Jaskowski said: “Charles was a very nice person.

“I remember getting stuck on my first day in Grenada as a trainee in 1984 when I sat with him in the Quay Street canteen.

“It was great to chat with him and a real inspiration. Condolences to his family and friends.’

Meanwhile, BBC presenter Steve Saul wrote: “Sorry to hear reports of the death of former Granada TV broadcaster and continuity presenter Charles Foster.

‘Along with Colin Weston and Jim Pope, they were the friendly face of ITV when I was growing up.

“I would have loved to have been a continuity announcer on vision.”

Tributes from fans also poured in as a person, he wrote: ‘Charles Foster, like many Granada presenters at the time, had both authority and warmth in his voice.
