DDoS attacks have recently made headlines after X was reportedly hit by such an issue during an interview between Donald Trump and Elon Mus. However, new research claims that this is not the only target.
A new Gcore Radar report finds that both the number and severity of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks have increased in the last months of 2024, as well as over the past year.
The report claims that the number of DDoS attacks in the first half of 2024 increased by almost half (46%) compared to the same period the previous year. In the second quarter of 2024, at least 445,000 DDoS incidents were reported – which, compared to the previous six months (August to December 2024), means the number of DDoS attacks increased by a third (34%).
Gaming and gambling
But not only did the number of attacks increase, their severity also increased.
According to Gcore, the most powerful attack in the first half of 2024 reached 1.7 Tbps, up from 1.6 Tbps in 2023.
However, it’s worth noting that in November 2021, network security professionals A10 Networks reported a 3.45 Tbps attack against an Azure customer. Additionally, in October 2020, Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) reported a 2.5 Tbps attack against “thousands of Google IP addresses.”
Regardless, Gcore says that the gaming and gambling industry is still the most affected by DDoS attacks, with around half (49%) of all recorded incidents suffering from it. Apparently, the highly competitive nature and high financial stakes associated with gaming and gambling make it a popular target for cybercriminals.
Attacks on the technology industry doubled in the period, reaching 15% of total incidents. Financial services, telecom and e-commerce rounded out the top five at 12%, 10% and 7%.
