The shocking moment when two boatmen jumped into the water off the coast of Michigan when their ship caught fire has been captured on video.

The pair was trapped aboard a 21-foot Baja when it caught fire on West Grand Traverse Bay.

Nathan Greenwood and his wife were cruising nearby and saw the speedboat engulfed in black smoke.

Video shows the Greenwoods approaching the boat as flames, which appeared to have originated in the engine compartment, become visible.

They warn the two passengers on board that it is too late to fight the fire and they must get away from the boat.

The passengers can be seen jumping overboard seconds before the engine seems to give out.

The Greenwoods managed to pull the stranded skippers safely out of the water.

“I knew very quickly that if they didn’t get off the boat, they would pass out from inhaling the smoke or the heat, or it would eventually explode,” Nathan said of the July 21 incident. “It’s really lucky because within three seconds of them jumping off the boat, it exploded.”

Peninsula Township Fire Chief Fred Gilstorff told WPBN that the ship eventually sank due to the extra water being brought on board.

The station also reported that the Peninsula Fire Department had to clean up a gas leak related to the incident.

It is still unclear what caused the boat to catch fire.
