Brazil is postponing the visa requirement for United States citizens, which requires the presentation of bank accounts in addition to visa applications.
The government previously announced that travelers from the United States, Australia and Canada will not only have to apply for a visa, but also prove that they have at least $2,000 in the bank. However, just hours before the law was to come into effect on Wednesday, the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva decided to postpone the measure.
This time the postponement will extend until 2025. The Lula government had previously postponed it until January 10.
Now, starting April 10, 2025, citizens from those three countries will have to present the visa, which costs $80.90 and is only available online.
Travelers from the United States, Canada and Australia do not need to show a visa when visiting Brazil until April 10, 2025, the Brazilian government announced on Wednesday
The government of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced last year that it was reintroducing visas and $2,000 bank receipts for some travelers. However, its implementation has been delayed
The visa is valid for ten years and travelers are allowed to stay for a maximum of 90 days per year.
The mandatory requirements require all potential visitors to submit a letter of intent detailing why they are traveling to Brazil, how long their trip will last, their accommodation location and telephone number.
Visitors will also be required to show proof of travel tickets, residence and income, including their last three bank account statements or six most recent pay stubs.
Additionally, the Brazilian government requires each visitor to have at least $2,000 in their account.
Anyone who does not meet the requirement will need a sponsor to complete a notarized Affidavit of Support and provide their last three bank statements.

At least 4.78 international travelers visited the South American country in the first ten months of 2023, according to Brazil’s Tourism Board
The tourism industry is largely opposed to the visa requirement, claiming that imposing the travel document would significantly deter citizens from Australia, Canada and the United States from visiting, according to Brazilian outlet G1.
The visa requirement was abolished in 2019 by the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
But under Lula, the government reintroduced the travel document as a form of retaliation after the United States, Canada and Australia required Brazilian citizens to present the travel permit at the port of entry.
Members of Congress objected to Lula’s travel decision and threatened to hold a vote before the House of Commons and the Secretariat for Institutional Relations reached an agreement to delay the visa.
