Italy secured qualification for the 2024 European Championship after controversially drawing 0-0 with Group C rivals Ukraine.
The tournament’s reigning champions were assured of a place in Germany following their success at Euro 2020 after their stalemate on Monday night.
Because England had already qualified for the European Championship, the last place in Group C was available to Italy or Ukraine.
They went into the match with the same points, 13, but the Italians had a better goal difference, meaning their 0–0 draw had little impact on the group standings.
Neither side managed to make a breakthrough on the night, but the home side will be left feeling badly affected after they were controversially denied a late penalty.
